Locate a Device

When a device is misplaced, Guardian can make it identify itself — an audible beep plus a full-screen on-screen alert — so you can walk it down and find it. This is available to superadmins from a device’s panel on the Agents page.

Clicking Locate queues a beep and an on-screen alert on the target device. Both repeat for up to 20 minutes, or until you click Mark as Found, whichever comes first.

Locate requires:

  • The device to be online with a known IP address
  • An agent build that supports the locate action (Windows, Linux, and macOS agents all do)

If no registered agent is found at the device’s IP, or its agent doesn’t support locate, Guardian shows an error instead of queuing anything.

Locating a powered-off server (BMC / Redfish)

Section titled “Locating a powered-off server (BMC / Redfish)”

For servers with a BMC (baseboard management controller), Guardian can also blink the chassis identify LED via Redfish — which works even when the device is powered off or unresponsive, since it talks to the BMC directly rather than the Guardian agent.

To enable it, open the BMC panel on the device’s detail page and save:

  • BMC address (IP or hostname)
  • Username and password
  • Whether to allow a self-signed certificate (common on BMC management interfaces)

Once a credential is saved, every Locate on that device also blinks the identify LED. The credential is write-only — Guardian stores it encrypted and never displays the saved values back, even in the form itself. Saving a new credential replaces the existing one; removing it falls back to beep/screen alert only. Because BMC locate doesn’t depend on the OS agent, the BMC panel is available whether or not the device is currently online.
