Hypervisors
Guardian can connect directly to a VMware (ESXi/vCenter) or Proxmox VE host and pull a live list of every VM running on it — separate from, and in addition to, the physical agents you deploy on individual machines.
Adding a host
Section titled “Adding a host”From Hypervisors in the sidebar, click + Add Host and provide:
- Name — a label of your choosing
- Type — VMware ESXi/vCenter, Proxmox VE, or Hyper-V
- Host address — hostname or IP of the vCenter/ESXi host or Proxmox node
- Accept self-signed certificate — turn on if the host uses an internal CA (common for on-prem vCenter/Proxmox)
The credential fields depend on the type:
- VMware — a username and password (e.g.
administrator@vsphere.local) - Proxmox — an API token ID and secret. Create one under Datacenter → Permissions → API Tokens in the Proxmox UI; read access is all discovery needs
- Hyper-V — no credentials yet. Guardian will only check that the host responds; VM enumeration for Hyper-V isn’t built yet
Credentials are encrypted at rest the same way BMC and SNMPv3 credentials are, and are never shown again once saved.
Discovering VMs
Section titled “Discovering VMs”Click Discover Now on a host to connect and pull its current VM list. Each result shows:
- Status — Connected, Auth failed, or Unreachable, with the underlying error shown inline when something goes wrong
- VM count — updates once discovery finishes
Click View VMs to see the discovered list: name, power state, guest OS, IP address, CPU count, memory, and (best-effort) which cluster or node and datastore each VM lives on.
Discovery is on-demand, not continuous — click Discover Now again any time to refresh a host’s VM list.
Removing a host
Section titled “Removing a host”Click the ✕ next to a host to remove it. This deletes the stored credential and the discovered VM list along with it, and can’t be undone.
